Some good pointers here from Jody and Bill about handling your youngster before sending them to the breakers. After spending a good amount of time away mustering and weaner educating, Bill is back home and starting on the long list of breakers.
We often have people asking how much they should be doing with their horse before it comes to us, most worried they haven’t done enough.
The easiest horses to start are the confident ones, that aren’t frightened of people.
There is a process we go through that teaches the horse pressure and release, they have to understand certain things before being hobbled, being saddled or laid down, etc. Even something as simple as tying up can go dramatically wrong if done too soon. We encourage everyone to leave those things until they are in the process and they are mentally prepared for that particular step.
This is also fair for the person who is going to be riding the horse, as they are the ones to see the reaction of the horse throughout the process.
If a horse is saddled without any understanding of what’s to come or any control in its reactions, it can have a lasting negative affect on that horse.
If a horse is laid down with no understanding of pressure and release, they struggle to process what it means to trust and give up their defence mechanisms to achieve the optimum result. And therefore are frightened when they come to us.
Laying down a second time, generally doesn’t have the same affect as the first, correct time, which again makes it unfair for the rider as that is one of their safety aspects in preparation for the first ride.
In short, make friends with your baby horse, have it leading and able to handle its legs in the event of an injury. And that’s all you have to do. Leaving the rest up to the breaker ensures the best results! ... See MoreSee Less
